Applying for a passport should not feel complicated, but for many Tanzanians, especially first-time applicants, the process can be confusing. Long queues, missing documents, and outdated information shared online make it harder than it needs to be. This guide is here to change that.

At Golden Star Consultants, we recently added passport application assistance as one of our core services. Our fee is TSh 230,000 per application, and we support you through the entire process, from document review to submission and follow-up.

Who This Guide Is For

  • First-time passport applicants
  • People renewing an expired passport
  • Parents applying on behalf of a minor child
  • Anyone who has had a previous application rejected and wants to reapply correctly

Documents You Need to Gather First

Before you do anything else, collect all of the following. Going to submit without one of these will cost you time and money:

  • Original birth certificate
  • National ID card (for adults aged 18 and above)
  • Parent birth certificate or affidavit (required for first-time adult applicants)
  • Local government letter from your ward or mtaa office
  • Two recent passport-size photographs on white background
  • Citizenship registration certificate

The Application Process, Step by Step

Step 1: Gather every document on the list above. Make sure everything is original, clearly legible, and undamaged. Blurry or torn documents are the number one cause of delays.

Step 2: Complete the application form. You can do this online through our website at goldenstarconsultants.com/passport-application, or you can download the physical form, fill it in by hand, and bring it to any of our offices.

Step 3: Submit your documents. Online applicants upload everything through our portal. Those applying in person can visit our Morogoro, Dar es Salaam, or Malawi offices.

Step 4: Pay the service fee of TSh 230,000. This covers our assistance with your application and submission support. Government processing fees are separate and paid directly to the Immigration Department.

Step 5: Our team reviews everything, flags any issues before submission, and sends your application through the correct channels.

Step 6: We follow up on your application and contact you as soon as your passport is ready for collection.

How Long Will It Take?

Processing times depend on the Immigration Department's current workload. Standard processing currently takes between 10 and 21 working days. We strongly advise applying at least six weeks before any planned travel date to give yourself enough buffer.

The Most Common Mistake to Avoid

The single most common reason applications are rejected or delayed is a name mismatch between the birth certificate and the national ID. Before you submit anything, check that your full name is spelled the same way on all your documents. If there is a difference, even a small one, you may need a sworn affidavit to explain the discrepancy. It is better to sort this out before applying than to face a rejection.
